Overall Objective

Contribute to the sustainable generation of profit along the striped catfish value chain and supply healthy fish products for the local population in the context of environmental changes

Specific Objectives

Provide sustainable and inclusive solutions to striped catfish farmers facing challenges linked to the increase of the salinity in the Mekong delta using genetic selection

Activities

  • Evaluate the effects of water salinity on striped catfish production and striped catfish production systems

  • Selection better adapted to brackish water conditions striped catfish

  • Training CTU capacity in fish genetic selection programmes

  • Setting up network of CTU and stakeholders (government seed centres and/or private hatcheries) involved in striped catfish farming for   breeder transfer process

Outputs

  • Improved knowledge of water salinity effects on striped catfish production and striped catfish farming systems

  • Striped catfish better adapted to brackish water conditions are selected

  • CTU capacity to develop fish genetic selection programmes or breeding schemes is improved and genetic tools/material are available for striped catfish selection

  • The stakeholders affected by salinity interact through a network, including the smallholders, to improve their ability to interact with CTU and state their needs
