FACULTY OF AQUATIC PATHOLOGY
Background:
The faculty was established in 2006. The mission of this faculty is to give lectures and conduct research that covers most areas of aquatic pathology and spans both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The faculty also delivers short training courses in specialized fields of diseases of aquatic organisms as well as provides services on disease diagnosis and advice on prevention and treatments for aquaculture farms.
Staff:
The faculty has 9 lecturers, and 7 researchers, holding different titles and degrees including 9 Ph.D. with 2 Professors, 3 Associate professors, and 7 Masters (4 Ph.D. students).
Education:
The faculty offers courses on health management in aquaculture for bachelor students in different majors of aquacultural and agricultural-related aspects such as aquaculture, fisheries management, veterinary, and agronomy. A number of advanced courses on aquaculture health management are included in MSc and Ph.D. programs for aquaculture. Several specialized courses in diseases and causative agents are being taught for bachelor students on aquatic pathology.
Research:
The faculty is in a position for major research in the pathology of aquatic organisms at the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries. Research on different fields of aquatic animal pathology and applied biotechnology in studying aquatic animal pathology are being conducted at the department. Major fields of research focus on shrimp and fish immunology, epidemiology of significant diseases such as white spot syndrome virus in shrimp, development of a vaccine for control of bacterial diseases in striped catfish, and prophylactic and therapeutic strategy for other emerging diseases in important cultured species.
Training and technology transfer:
The faculty delivers several technical training courses for local/international participants. These courses include:
- Detection of virus in shrimp or bacteria in fish using polymerase chain reaction technique
- Histopathological diagnostic of diseases in aquaculture
- Isolation and identification of common bacterial pathogens in cultured fish/shrimp
- Identification of parasites of cultured aquatic species
- Antibiotic sensitivity test and minimal inhibitory concentration of antibiotics on bacterial isolates
- Health management and diagnosis of common diseases in shrimp and striped catfishes
Facilities:
The faculty has a series of well-equipped laboratories for doing research and training on histology, molecular biology, parasitology, and bacteriology. There are also wet labs for nursing aquatic animals and challenging experiments.
