Department of Freshwater Aquaculture
Background The missions of the department are to offer education, research and training on freshwater aquaculture to meet the increasing demands in the region. Education The department offers two major fields on seed production and culture techniques. Major subjects of educational program consist of Freshwater aquaculture systems, Fish breeding technology, Ornamental fish culture. In addition to theories courses, students are also attending practical subjects on fish breeding in hatchery. Besides offering coursed for Bachelor student, the department also serves coursework on Freshwater Aquaculture for Master and Doctoral students. Research The department has succeeded in artificial propagation of many indigenous fish species. These consist of Pangasius catfish, Clarias catfish, Climbing perch, Giant snakehead, Marble loach, Marble goby, barbs, Chinese and Indian carps. The department also conducts research, develop and apply different aquaculture systems to the farmers in the Mekong delta. In the future, sustainable aquaculture is one of the priority researches for the Mekong delta. Training The department regularly or casually offers short training courses for local and international participants such as: - Integrated farming system such as VAC, rice - fish, giant prawn - rice - Intensive pond culture systems (catfish, climbing perch, snakehead) and in cage (catfish, marble goby, Tilapia, barbs) - Freshwater Fish Seed production such as Pangasius catfish, Clarias catfish, snakehead, climbing perch, feather knife fish, Chinese carps and Indian carps - Study tours on inland aquaculture in the Mekong Delta.

Facilities
The department manages hatcheries which are designed in traditional and modern styles for different purposes. These facilities serve for practices of students and for research of post graduate students and staffs.

ASEAN Fisheries Education Network - ASEAN-FEN

In order to strengthen and promote collaboration in education, research, information exchange as well as staff and student exchange in aquaculture and fisheries among ASEAN countries and with other international institutions and organizations for sustainable development of aquaculture and fisheries in the region, nine Universities including Can Tho University (Vietnam), Kasetsart University (Thailand), Nong Lam University (Viet Nam), Prince of Songkla University (Thailand), Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (Thailand), Universitas Airlangga (Indonesia), Universitas Brawijaya (Indonesia), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (Malaysia), Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia) has jointly established and made the Declaration of the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN) on 30 October 2014 during the International Fisheries Symposium – IFS2014, Surabaya, Indonesia.
