Department of Coastal Aquaculture
Background The missions of the department are to offer education, research and training on coastal aquaculture to meet the increasing demands in the region. Education The department offers major courses such as Crustacean Culture, mollusk Culture, Marine Fish Culture, Seaweed Culture and Marine Hatchery Management for Batchelor students in Aquaculture, Aquatic Animal Health Management, Fisheries Management, and Agronomy. These courses are also offered to Master students in Aquaculture. Research Research is one of dynamic activities of the department. Major fields of research are applied research on development of new technologies for seed production and farming systems of important marine and brackish water species. These are including shrimp, freshwater prawn, mud crabs, swimming crabs (crustacean); seabass, mullet, brackish water catfish, spotted scat fish, marine catfish, cobia (marine fish); white clam, blood cockle, oyster, mangrove snail (mollusks), Eucheuma, Gracilaria (Seaweeds)… Trends of research are to apply biotechnology in seed production and farming of marine and brackish water species; to develop of integrated and environmental friendly farming systems; and to apply BMP for shrimp farming. Training The department regularly or casually offers short training courses for local and international participants. The major courses are: - Seed production of tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon), especially with recirculating systems - Seed production freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), especially with modified static green water systems - Seed production of mud crabs (Scylla paramamosain) - Shrimp farming (Intensive culture systems, rice-shrimp alternative farming systems, mangrove-shrimp farming systems) - Marine fish seed production and culture (Cobia, Mullet, Scat Fish…) - Artemia culture - Study tours on coastal aquaculture in the Mekong Delta. |

Facilities
The department manages several experimental hatcheries and wet labs for practices of students and for research of staffs at the main campus. The department operation 17-ha research station in Soc Trang province for field and lab researches. In addition, the department also cooperate to farmer fo marine fish cage culture and seed production research in Nam Du islands of Kien Giang province.

In order to strengthen and promote collaboration in education, research, information exchange as well as staff and student exchange in aquaculture and fisheries among ASEAN countries and with other international institutions and organizations for sustainable development of aquaculture and fisheries in the region, nine Universities including Can Tho University (Vietnam), Kasetsart University (Thailand), Nong Lam University (Viet Nam), Prince of Songkla University (Thailand), Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (Thailand), Universitas Airlangga (Indonesia), Universitas Brawijaya (Indonesia), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (Malaysia), Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia) has jointly established and made the Declaration of the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN) on 30 October 2014 during the International Fisheries Symposium – IFS2014, Surabaya, Indonesia.
