FACULTY OF AQUATIC BIOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Background:
The Faculty of Aquatic Biology and Environmental Science is functioning as a fundamental unit in the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries. The mission of the faculty is to conduct teaching, research, and training on fundamental disciplines including water sciences, aquatic ecology, fish physiology, beneficial bacteria, live food, etc. in aquaculture.
Staff:
The faculty comprises 6 lecturers and 10 researchers; of which, there are 2 Professors, 2 Associate professors, 4 Ph.D., 6 MSc. (2 doctoral students), and 2 BSc. (1 master student).
Education:
The faculty is responsible for offering courses on Water quality management, Environmental impact assessment in aquaculture, Fish physiology, Aquatic plants and animals, Anatomy and taxonomy of aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates, Aquatic ecosystems, Aquatic ecology, Live food production… for undergraduate and graduate students in different majors including Aquaculture, Aquatic Pathology, and Fisheries Management…
Research:
Research is a compulsorily important task of the faculty. Primary research fields are focused on water quality assessment and management, assessment of environmental impact from aquaculture, fish physiology, aquatic resources, population dynamics, bio-monitoring, biodiversity of aquatic organisms, live food production technologies, beneficial bacteria in aquaculture, natural bioactive compounds, etc.
Training courses are occasionally organized as demanded. The following courses are often offered to local staffs, aquaculturists or farmers in the Mekong Delta:
- Water quality analysis and management in shrimp/fish ponds
- Algae and aquatic invertebrate identification
- Physiology of aquatic animals
- Isolation and identification of beneficial bacteria for aquaculture uses
- Live food culture techniques (Algae, Rotifers, Artemia, Waterflea/Moina, Copepods)
The faculty possesses several laboratories and wet labs for its teaching, research, and training. Advanced Aquatic Environment Lab is equipped with much modern equipment that can analyze more than 30 water and sediment parameters. Aquatic Biodiversity Lab supports to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and zoobenthos. In addition, other advanced labs such as Fish Physiology Lab, Marine Bioresources Lab, Live Food Lab, and Aquaculture Probiotics Lab can be used for all research and teaching activities in the Department. Especially, a wet lab provides facilities to develop live food culture models.
