Overall Objective

Biodiversity in Mekong - Chao Phraya region is conserved and used sustainably by local people including members of public, academic and private sector

Specific Objectives

  • To provide additional information on fish diversity through primary data collection for policy making on biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use in the region

  • To develop human resources taking part in researches and activities for biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use in the region

  • To encourage local people to participate in activities for biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use

  • To share information and common understanding on biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use among 4 countries in the region

  • To keep in close touch with international endeavors on biodiversity conservation and its sustainable use

Activities

  • Field survey of Mekong fishes

  • Sustainable management of voucher specimen collections and its enhancement

  • Joint researches and trainings for particular subjects and problems

  • Organizing a study group and a domestic forum

  • Joint field survey on distribution of fishes among government, academic, and local communities

  • Annual regional meeting among 4 countries

  • Communication with international organizations in the region

Outputs

  • List of the fish in the study area

  • Fish collection room with all collected samples

  • Publication: 3 international papers and 1 book

  • Research support for 4 Master students

  • Traning workshops for international and local technicians and officials

 

 ASEAN Fisheries Education Network - ASEAN-FEN

In order to strengthen and promote collaboration in education, research, information exchange as well as staff and student exchange in aquaculture and fisheries among ASEAN countries and with other international institutions and organizations for sustainable development of aquaculture and fisheries in the region, nine Universities including Can Tho University (Vietnam), Kasetsart University (Thailand), Nong Lam University (Viet Nam), Prince of Songkla University (Thailand), Rajamangala University of Technology Srivijaya (Thailand), Universitas Airlangga (Indonesia), Universitas Brawijaya (Indonesia), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (Malaysia), Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia) has jointly established and made the Declaration of the  ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN) on 30 October 2014 during the International Fisheries Symposium – IFS2014, Surabaya, Indonesia. Please visit the website (https://aseanfen.org.my/) for further information about the ASEAN-FEN. As a result, IFS will be one of the important activities of the ASEAN-FEN which will be co-organized by the nine core universities every year.
