Department of Aquatic Pathology

Background

The department of aquatic biology and pathology was established in 2006. The mission of this department is to give lectures and conduct research which cover most areas of aquatic biology, genetics and pathology and spans both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The department also delivers short training courses in specialized fields of diseases of aquatic organisms as well as provides services on disease diagnosis and advises on preventions and treatments for aquaculture farms.

Education

The department offers courses on health management in aquaculture for bachelor students in different majors of aquacultural and agricultural related aspects such as: aquaculture, fisheries management, veterinary and agronomy. An advanced course on aquaculture health management is included in MSc program for aquaculture. A number of specialized courses in diseases and causative agents are being taught for bachelor students on aquatic pathology.

Research

The department is in a position for major research in biology and pathology of aquatic organisms at the College of Aquaculture and Fisheries. Research over a broad spectrum of biology, pathology, biotechnology and genetics of aquatic animals are being conducted at the department. Major fields of research focus on biology of indigenous aquatic species, epidermiology of significant diseases such as white spot syndrome virus in shrimp and bacterial diseases in Pangasius catfish, prophylactic and therapeutic strategy for emerged diseases in important cultured species.

Training

The department delivers a number of technical training courses for local participants. These courses include:
-  Detection of virus in shrimp using polymerase chain reaction technique

-  Histopathological diagnostic of diseases in aquaculture

-  Isolation and identification of bacterial pathogen in diseased aquatic specimens

-  Identification of parasites of cultured aquatic species

-  Antibiotic sensitivity test and minimal inhibitory concentration of antibiotic on bacterial isolates

-  Diagnostic of common diseases in shrimp and catfishes

Facilities

The department has a series of well equipped laboratories for doing research and training on histology, molecular biology, parasitology and bacteriology. There are also wet labs for maintenance of aquatic animal and for challenge experiments.
